Barry, I was watching someone talk about this and used Joe Pass as an example. But then the person didn't really have a command of scales beyond the playing out of chord shapes. It seems to me just the shapes would feel so limiting w/o having the freedom to utilize scalar material. Your thoughts?
I agree that not having a command of the scales would prevent you from being completely creative, but the idea of playing out of the chord shape is something that I also do and stress to my students. I "see" the scale and chord shape superimposed over each other which allows me to be very fluid when connecting ideas. Hope that helps!

It also helps the hearing of shapes if you can limit to the 5 positions. And hearing helps phrasing, and memory.
