Barry Greene Video Lessons

Is there any secret to memorizing these tunes as far as the basic changes go....Sometimes i think it shouldn't be that hard because it's all mostly 2-5-1 or 1-6-2-5 but for some reason it seems hard....any suggestions

Don't get hung up on a particular key signature that is common for a tune. You need to know how to paint by numbers, or what they call "nashville charts". So the first 8 of Autumn Leaves is 2-5-1-4 and then a 2-5-1 to the relative minor or 6th. If you know that then it doesn't matter if someone calls it in Bb, C, Ab or whatever, you will know the chords relative to any tonal center.

These are some of the most common things off the top of my head.

2-5-1 (to the 1, to the 4, to the 6)
major to minor
dominant 2
turnarounds (1-6-2-5, 3-6-2-5, chromatic descending)

If you think of each of these changes as a type of change, then it's just a matter of putting them in order and remembering key changes.

In reference to Barry's comment, Jimmy Bruno used to say "one of deese, and one of does" , implying that the old school guys just knew how the changes sound and really didn't communicate in an academic way like people who spend more time posting on forums than practicing do (....and yeah, guilty as charged)
