Hi folks!
I have a question for Barry, but I would like to see the student's answers too:
In my area, there's few jazz players, making very difficult to find piano players or someone to comp. That leaves me with the big responsability to play in trio setting.
What do you think a guitar player needs in order to play with bass and drums with no piano?
Thanks a lot in advance and sorry for my bad english.

As much depth as possible. Lines, chords octaves, intervals, pedals, reharmonizations, counterpoint. The more you have together the more interesting your music will be. You may not even use half of what you know, but having a deep understanding of harmony with a great ear, well, that’s everything.
I do apologize but what exactly do we mean by counterpoint on the guitar?
I am just describing two melody lines moving in opposite directions independent of each other.
That would be a good topic driven lesson!
