Barry, I often see comments in books or online about getting a "more modern" sound. E.g. Playing triads can give you a more modern sound, or using wider intervals can give you a more modern sound. Is this really just playing outside?
No, there are diatonic triad pairs that will give you a modern sound. It's the intervallic playing versus linear. An example would be F and G major triads on a D-7 chord. Check out the triad pair lesson for a deep discussion of this.
