Barry showed how George Benson omits the 4th playing major.
I also notice Metheny sometimes omits the 6th on a minor...
Avoiding or carefully using a note a half step away from a chord tone within a scale seems to be the answer.
Can anyone expound?
Thanks

I don’t think that Metheny would avoid the 6th degree on minor very often as that is the sound of Dorian and one of the most important and desired tones available. I dont think its as theory based as you’re making it out to be. I believe it’s about creating an even amount of notes to help with phrasing. Meaning changing a 7 note scale into a 6 or 8 note scale. -Barry
I guess I'm referring to the tunes Metheny writes that are in the Aeolian mode such as Minuano.
I'm hearing pentatonic with the 2 or 9...
Sounds very pleasing and it's easy to be melodic.
The Benson thing seems similar but major.
Fun stuff...
Thanks Barry
I'd love to buy you a beer someday in person!
