Hello Barry,
I thought maybe this would be an interesting discussion for other players as well. I really like the sound of horns playing in fouths and I am currently trying out different concepts to arrange the major scale in cells of fourths ( 3 fourths stacked on top of each other).
My question is - what is the best way to pick lines like that? Stick to alternate picking? I have seen people using hybrid picking (pick the first note and use your other fingers for the remaining 2 notes), but I would like to stick to my "usual" technique, if possible and not switch (and potentially mess) it all up, just to get certain sound. Help, please :)
It's not easy, but I keep the alternate picking going. I've seen guitarists have amazing success using economy picking on phrases like that. Find what works for you! Thanks for your question LM and keep us posted! -barry
If you're going to try the alternate picking method. Create a simple exercise using 4ths and practice slowly with a metronome. You'll discover where the issue is, then it's just a matter of repetition.
Barry, thanks. I have a sequence from Rosenwinkel that I am working on right now. Unfortunately there are many problems :)
Right hand accuracy is one, but I am working on it and trying to anchor my wrist more to get more accurate motion
Left hand accuracy when barréing 4th voicings is another thing.
Switching from the usual mode to playing fourths still feels weird. Almost like a different picking style...
