I came across a quote by Coleman Hawkins in which he says "I don't play chords, I play movements.". What do you think he means?
Just guessing here, but it sounds like he’s talking about voice leading chord changes versus playing over each chord. The confusing thing is when you hear him improvise, it sounds like he’s dealing with each chord individually at least to me either way. It’s a nice musical way of thinking about improvising, considering tonal centers versus each chord individually. always good to hear from you Dane. Hope things are good. -Barry
